So, I played Firewatch over two nights, this game had been on my radar for a little while, I think it was out in Feb 2016 and I seem to remember it getting quite good reviews and reactions. And so, when I was looking for some games to buy from the PS store, this was one of three that I got. You can find more about the game here. Oooooh and it looks like they have a new game out in 2019!
Anyways……Now the game itself is really good, you play as Henry and Henry’s new job is to act as a lookout for forest fires etc, and your only other companion is Delilah, but even she is only a voice on the other end of a walkie talkie. So you get to your watchtower where you will spend a summer, but of course, things start to go a little off track…strange things happen, I’m not going to spoil it for anyone…and then the tension and mystery builds up as secrets of what had happened before your character gets there begin to unwind. Like I said, I really did enjoy this game, I would recommend it to someone, however, tragically there is one thing that has kinda spoiled the game for me at the moment, and that’s the glitch at the end. And so I also feel like I just need to point that out as I recommend it.
Let me explain; so during the game you find a camera, an old disposable one where there are only a certain number of pictures you can take. Which I LOVED the idea of, and it was really enjoyable taking pictures as I hiked through the forest and sometimes during the game you are ‘told’ to take pics by Delilah. I was so excited about being able to see these pictures at the end, as I had already found out that that should have happened (the pictures did not show up in my capture gallery) and apparently you can order them and have them printed out and sent to you (not sure if they still do that).
Unfortunately, I did not know about the glitch at the end of the game, which seems like a known issue. Which kinda sucks. Basically, I got to see the pictures I had taken from the camera in the end credits, along with a handful that had already been taken by the owners of said camera (no spoilers), but then nothing. I go back to the main screen. Also what is meant to happen after you have finished a play through of the game is Free Roam is meant to unlock. Now, I can’t seem to be able to load my last game, or access Free Roam. When Googled, this known about glitch has some advice from the developers; either, re-start the PS4, go into your saved data setting and load an earlier version (both of these I have done) OR ‘Rebuild your console’s database’ which sounds completely scary to me and I don’t know if I want to be doing this. At all. Not with my luck, I don’t want to be messing about with something that sounds like I could potentially mess up my PS4 – I mean, I’m not technical, so this might not be as bad as it sounds, but again…I’d rather not. Basically this means that at the moment I don’t have access to the camera pictures I took in the game or able to re-load my game or load up Free Roam. I shall update on whether or not I am able to fix this. So that’s a bit of a downer really, especially as I thought the game was good.
BUT there are some silver linings, as I said I DID really enjoy the game! Honest! Not going to lie it was a refreshing change to a bow and arrow hehe So these pictures below I guess can be considered more of screenshots as they are literally are just point and save. The only thing I’ve done is edit out the white ‘pointer’ – not sure of the technical name – and even then those with a trained eye can probably see where I’ve done that on the pictures. lol I just wanted to show off the game, as it is soo very pretty…
Here are the first few shots I took…
Then you reach your watch tower and the job begins….
You find your way around via a map, that you keep updating throughout the game, and compass. And the walkie talkie becomes your best friend, kinda hehe
As I said, as you progress through the game you start finding out more about what happened to the watchers before you and also forging a friendship with Delilah. I just think this game is so pretty. I even found one of my most favourite books!! That made me so happy.
All in all a great game. Just a shame about the glitch at the very end. I will continue to try and sort it out, I’m wondering if I can just delete the saved data and play again, but that might just turn out the same. But I was already knowing that I would re-play that game at some point as there are places I wanted to explore and different reply choices as you talk to Delilah. If anybody has managed to fix the issue, preferably without doing the scary rebuilding of database, then let me know in the comment or tweet me @louisylou!
